The UK Youth Parliament
Every year, there are elections for the 369
(UKYP). Any young person between 11 and 18 can be
a candidate, and all young people from this age group
can vote. Over half a million young people vote every year.
The UKYP have debates throughout the year. In November,
the members of the UKYP take over the House of
Commons chamber for a day! They organise debates and
votes in the Houses of Parliament just like politicians do.

The Afghan Youth Parliament
Afghanistan is a country with a very
troubled history. It has been invaded by
Russia, the United States, the United
Kingdom and many more. Now, it's an independent
country and a democracy. The Afghan Youth Parliament
helps young people to understand how democracy
works, and why it sometimes doesn't work. The Youth
Parliament members have elections and debates,
and make decisions. There are 122 members, and the
number of women, disabled people, nomads, Hindus
and Sikhs is fixed. For example, there must be at least
1 Hindu and 1 Sikh in the parliament. This is a way to
make sure that women and minorities are represented.
