Last month my class went on a school trip to town of Kołomłyn. We went there by bus. We left from school at 8.30 a.m. On the way to Kołomłyn there is an old mansion house in Branice. We stopped there to take a look at the mansion and to see an interesting exhibition of prehistoric tools and pots, jugs, vases and other objects made of clay.
We arived at Kołomłyn at about 11 in the morning. The town has a few interesting sights. One of them is the castle which dates back to the 14th century. It has a beautiful arcaded courtyard. The castle was once decorated by Italian artists employed at Wawel. The present castle is from the 16th century. Kołomłyn lies at the edge of the Kołomłyn Forest, only 25 kilometres east of Cracow.
It was once an ideal place for the kings of Poland to go hunting. The kings got here their supplies of meat before military expeditions. When the capital of Poland was transferred to Warsaw Polish kings did not stop coming here. Even in the 18th century they continued hunting even though they needed a special permission from Austria to hunt in the forest. They came here because the forest used to be a paradise for hunting. It was and still is inhabited by the wild boar, Carpathian stags and the bison.
We visited two other sights of the town: a church from 1350 and a mound 14 metres high which was raised there to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the battle of Grunwald.
Finally, we went to see an observatory and to listen to a lecture about the Universe. Unfortunately, we could not look at the sky through the telescope there because the weather was not good. It was cloudy and rainy.
I hope I can return to the observatory on a bright and clear day.
