In my opinion it would be a great change for the better for our planet. Currently the climate change topic is one of the hottest in TV or newspapers, not only ours but also our children's future, the future of the planet and whole humanity, depends on the action we take now - supermarkets take huge part in our daily life, if we change little things such as plastic bags to more environment friendly options such as, for example, compostable bag, what many European countries already did make a big change, especially looking at the statistics where Americans alone use approximately 100 billion plastic bags a year, but only an estimated 1% get returned for recycling each year
When it comes to paper bags, it's better option than plastic, but still for the production we use sources from our precious earth - trees. instead of paper bags we could use cotton bags that you can wash and use for a really long time. Another alternatives are: Woven Polypropyleneags, Jute bags or recycled foldable bags
