A USEFUL INVENTION
Remote controls are used almost everywhere. They can be used to operate TV sets, beds, car door locks or gates from a distance.
People who love gadgets have several remote controls near them, especially those for controlling home entertainment devices. 5.1. _____ Although remote controls are most closely linked to television in popular culture, they are an invention which appeared in the 1800s.
Nikola Tesla, who was a Serbian-American inventor, first used radio waves in 1898 to control a tiny boat. The boat was controlled thanks to a small metal antenna. Financially, Tesla’s remote-controlled boats were a failure. His intended client, the U.S. Navy, thought the technology was too weak for war. 5.2. _____ Shortly after Tesla’s breakthroughs, Spanish engineer Leonardo Torres-Quevedo used remote radio equipment to control a boat, and even submarine torpedoes. In World War I, the German navy used remotely controlled boats loaded with explosives to attack enemy ships.
In the 1930s and 1940s, a few consumer electronic devices with remote controls arrived on the scene, such as garage door openers and model airplanes. The use of remote controls for radios resulted later in TV remotes. Before remote controls, TV viewers had to go to their televisions to change the channel and volume using rotating dials or buttons. In 1950, electronics manufacturer Zenith introduced the Lazy Bones remote. 5.3. _____ This was problematic and the product needed improvement.
Gradually, remote devices became better and better. Ultrasonic remotes were the standard for TVs until the 1980s, when they began using the infrared light signals that are most common today. 5.4. _____ This completely changed the way consumers interacted with their electronic equipment. Instead of getting a bit of exercise every time they wanted to turn on a device, or change a radio station or TV channel, people could remain sitting in their armchairs for hours.
A. The popularity of remotes led to the development of so-called universal remotes, which could be programmed to make life much easier.
B. Unfortunately, it used a long cable that caused many accidents.
C. Many other products are also remote controlled, such as toy cars and air-conditioning units.
D. This was a new type of lifestyle in which motionless consumers could have easy access to many television channels.
E. But the concept of remote control quickly spread to other types of equipment.
