EUROTUNNEL
4,1
The Channel Tunnel, also called Eurotunnel, is one of the seven wonders of the modern world. It is
the world's longest undersea tunnel, linking southern England and northern France. It is 50.45 km
long and 37.9 km of the tunnel is under the English Channel. At its deepest, the tunnel is 75 metres
below sea level.
4.2.
Construction of the tunnel started in 1988, and the first trains started running in 1994. However,
the idea of connecting the UK and France by tunnel appeared in 1802 when a French engineer
created the first technical design for a cross-channel tunnel lit by oil lamps with coaches pulled by
horses. The idea had many supporters, including Napoleon Bonaparte, but wasn't completed.
4.3.
Eurotunnel contains two railway tunnels used for goods and passenger trains, and a service tunnel
for maintenance operations and in case passengers need to be evacuated. In the event of a loss
of power from one end of the tunnel, the whole system can be supplied from the other end. Various
fire-protection and detection systems are installed at different points in the tunnels.
4.4
It takes 35 minutes to get between the terminals in Calais and Folkestone via the channel tunnel. Passengers
spend the time in smart, air-conditioned trains while crossing the channel. There are places to sit back
and relax, or get out and stretch your legs. Before boarding, passengers can make use of shops, bars and
fast-food restaurants.
