At the beginning of my letter, I cordially greet you. I am writing this letter to you in order to make you aware of what important holiday awaits us on May 3rd.
The constitution of May 3 was established in 1791. The constitution of May 3 was established by a governmental law adopted on that day by the Seym. It was designed to eliminate the long-standing defects of the political system of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and its golden freedom. The constitution introduced the political equalization of townspeople and nobility, and placed the peasants under state protection, thus mitigating the worst abuses of serfdom. The constitution abolished disastrous institutions, such as the liberum veto, which before the adoption of the Constitution left the Seym at the mercy of every deputy who, if he wished - on his own initiative, or bribed by foreign forces or magnates - could invalidate all resolutions passed by the Seym.
