ANDY WARHOL
was a famous American artist
who was born in 1928 in Pittsburgh, in the USA. His
real name was Andrew Warhola, but he later changed
it to Warhol. His father was a builder who died when
Warhol was only 13 years old. In contrast to his father,
Warhol's talent lay in art. He discovered at an early age
that he was good at painting and drawing, and so he
went on to study art at college.
After college, Warhol went to New York, where he
drew pictures for magazines and exhibited his drawings
in art galleries. Then, in the 1960s, Warhol became
interested in painting ordinary, popular objects, such as
soup cans, cola bottles, road signs and hamburgers. This
style, which was called Pop Art, originated in the 1950s
in the United Kingdom, but it was new and original in
the USA. Many other American artists were interested
in the new movement and Warhol became very
famous. Thanks to his own fame, he was able to paint
portraits of other famous people, like Marilyn Monroe,
Elizabeth Taylor and Elvis Presley. He also created
a series of self-portraits.
Andy Warhol died in 1987, but today, people are still
fascinated by his incredible talent and the eccentric life
that he led.
