Musical - a theatrical form that combines music, songs, dialogues and dance. The emotional charge of the work - humor, pathos, love, anger - just like the story itself, is expressed through words, music, movement and technical aspects of the performance, creating one coherent whole. Since the beginning of the 20th century, musical theater productions are simply called "musicals". An extravaganza was an earlier form of the show similar to a musical.
Musicals are performed all over the world. They can be staged on big stages, such as high-budget productions of the West End theaters in London or Broadway in New York, or in smaller avant-garde theaters, on Off-Broadway, or as local, away productions, in amateur school groups, theaters and other performance spaces. In addition to Great Britain and North America, there are other dynamic musical scenes in many countries in Europe, Latin America, Australia and Asia.
A contemporary musical is an eclectic and multi-material form. He uses various music genres (from hard rock through jazz, calypso, rap to classical music) and various types of dance (from classical ballet to contemporary dance and tap dancing). In musical productions it is common to use spectacular and monumental decorations, multimedia techniques and full acoustic sound. There are various types of orchestras in musicals - from small combos (eg Grease, Chicago, Rent) to large musical orchestras (eg Miss Saigon, Dance of the Vampires, Phantom of the Opera).
Musicals vary in duration. They range from short, one-act performances, to many acts and several hours of duration (or even multi-performances); however, most musicals last between one and a half and three hours. Musicals are usually presented in two acts with a single, 10-20 minute intermission.
